"It’s 1.5 miles out and back with 80 feet of elevation, and it takes you into the canyon along the banks of the Rio Grande river, with 1500 vertical feet of limestone cliffs towering above the trail." The narrow slot canyon to the right (south) of Dog Canyon is the Devil’s Den. A hike along the rim of Devil’s Den offers good views into the slot canyon and expansive panoramas of the surrounding desert, but it is NOT recommended that you attempt a trip through canyon without a companion and proper gear. It is also a way to experience the Chihuahuan Desert, and to get an idea of the real personality of the desert part of Big Bend National Park. The Den: Big Bend's Slot Canyon The Den in Big Bend is a little slot canyon that can be great fun to climb in.

Dog Canyon and Devil's Den, Big Bend National Park. The northernmost trails in Big Bend National Park lead to a pair of narrow ravines in the Santiago Mountains, the long, thin range that forms a natural boundary between the park and the adjacent Black Gap WMA. The shorter of the two is the level, 2 mile path to Dog Canyon, a deep but relatively wide ravine leading right through the mountains to the desert at the far side, and bordered by steep, rocky hillsides interspersed with vertical cliffs.
